3 Effective Ways To Improve Your Home's Energy Efficiency

If you own a home, an important aspect of it is the energy efficiency. You can improve your home's energy efficiency by taking these steps.

Change Your AC's Air Filter

An integral piece of equipment in your home is the AC unit, as this helps keep your home at the right temperature. If the AC unit has an air filter that is dirty, it could make the AC unit work harder, driving up your energy bills. This is why it's important to inspect the filter as often as possible.

First, take out your filter and hold it up to the light. Unless it's a reusable filter, you will need to replace it if it's completely covered in dirt and dust. Look on the side of the old filter, seeing what the dimensions are. Purchase the same size and set it up where the old one was. If you are not comfortable with this process, you can always have an AC repair specialist do it for you.

Replace Damaged Weatherstrips below Doors

The weatherstrips below your doors are important for your home's energy efficiency. If they get cracked, air could seep out or get in, driving up your bills every month. If you notice that the weatherstrips are coming apart or are cracked, you need to replace them.

When replacing the weatherstrip, consider one made out of vinyl that has an adhesive backing. Vinyl weatherstrips are completely weatherproof. So even when exposed to harsh weather elements, they will not be prone to damaging easily. They create a tight seal underneath your doors, preventing air from coming in or going out.

The adhesive backing makes these weatherstrips extremely easy to set up. All you have to do is line them up below your door and press down on them firmly. Screws or nails won't be required at all.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

If you are in a rush, you may forget to turn off the heat or cool air before leaving the house. This drives up your energy bills, but this doesn't have to be a problem if you install a programmable thermostat in your home.

With this device, you can schedule the heat or cool air to run only when you are home. This helps you use fewer resources, allowing you to save some money. These thermostats don't contain any mercury, and they are eco-friendly. If you don't have one of these thermostats in your household, you could be wasting $173 a year.

Having an energy efficient home is important, as it helps you save money over the months. You can effectively improve your home's energy efficiency by taking the steps above. Talk to your local HVAC service, such as Davis Repair Service, for more information.
