3 Helpful Maintenance Steps For Residential Bathrooms

The bathroom is one of the most used areas of your home, so everything in it needs to look and work great. This is possible when you take these steps.

Remove Mold

One of the worst things to find in the bathroom is mold. This can cause you and your family to get sick. Some molds can cause throat irritation, coughing, skin irritation, and eye irritation. Look around the shower, sink and toilet area. If you find mold, put some borax on it.

Borax acts as a disinfectant, which will kill and inhibit mold growth. Put borax on the mold and let it set for several hours. Wear gloves and put the mold in a plastic bag, and then take it out to the dumpster. Then, scrub the area where the mold was with disinfectant wipes. This process goes a long way in terms of keeping your family healthy.

Unclog Toilet

A common problem to happen in the bathroom is when the toilet gets clogged. When this happens, you can't use the bathroom at all. You don't have to worry, however, as you can simply use a wire hanger to remove the clog.

Unravel a wire hanger to where it's straight, and put a soft cloth around an end. Put this end into the toilet's drain. The cloth will prevent the porcelain of your toilet from getting scratched.

Keep moving the hanger down until you feel some resistance. Once you do, push and twist at the same time. A lot of times this will break up whatever is clogging your toilet, whether it's hair or paper.

Check for Worn Caulk in the Shower

If you have tiles in the shower area of your bathroom, the caulk may begin to wear down. When this happens, holes can form, which can let water get behind the tiles and walls. As a result, you may have to deal with severe water damage.

You can prevent these damages from happening by putting an adhesive sealant in areas where the caulk has worn down. This type of sealant creates a watertight seal, preventing water from seeping through the caulk. It's also temperature-resistant, so you don't have to worry about it breaking down if it gets too hot or cold in the shower.

Keeping your bathroom working and looking great is important because it's used often throughout the day. Maintaining your bathroom doesn't have to be difficult if you take the steps above and contact companies such as Colfax Corporation.
