A Clean Roof Lasts Longer: Effective Ways To Keep Your Roof Clean

Did you know that dirt buildup on your roof can cause it to wear out faster? It can also lead to mold growth since the dirt and debris that is left on your roof can provide the perfect breeding ground for mold. Not only that, a dirty roof makes it difficult for you to see areas that might need to be repaired.

An easy way to keep your roof clean is to invest in a high pressure washer. You can use your washer to clean your roof. Cleaning your roof at least once a year will keep the dirt and debris away, and can help prevent mold growth.

Cleaning Your Roof

Before you wash your roof, you should sweep away any piles of debris that might be present, including any leaves or pine needles you might find. You can remove the debris with an ordinary broom. Be sure to remove as much of the debris as possible. This will make the washing easier. It will also allow you to find any hidden mold that might need to be removed. Now you're ready to wash your roof.

Supplies You'll Need

  • High pressure washer
  • Garden hose
  • Slip resistant shoes

  1. Put on your safety grip shoes.
  2. Attach pressure washer to your garden hose.
  3. Get up on your roof and move down to the bottom edge of the roofline.
  4. Begin spraying your roof in a straight line, one section at a time.
  5. Continue moving across the roof until that entire section is washed.
  6. Move up to the next section and continue the process.
  7. Don't try to begin at the top of your roof or you may fall when the surface gets wet.

Removing Mold Growth

If you found mold growth while you were cleaning the roof, you're going to need to remove that as quickly as possible. This is a relatively easy process.

Supplies You'll Need

  • Garden sprayer
  • 1 cup of mild detergent
  • 2 quarts of household bleach
  • 2 gallons of hot water
  • Garden hose
  • Slip resistant shoes

  1. Fill your garden sprayer with hot water.
  2. Add your detergent and bleach to the water.
  3. Be sure you're wearing slip resistant shoes.
  4. Once you're on the roof, locate the mold growth.
  5. Spray a thick layer of the cleaning solution on each area that has visible mold.
  6. Be sure to thoroughly saturate the mold.
  7. Allow the solution to sit for about 20 minutes.
  8. Use your garden hose to rinse the solution off your roof.

To keep your roof in good condition, use these steps to remove dirt and mold. You, or a reliable company like Roof Renewal Systems, LLC should inspect your roof and give it a thorough cleaning at least once a year.
