Keeping Your Family Safe During A Home Renovation Project

Have you been planning a home remodel? If so, you probably have a long list of materials and equipment that you'll need to be able to complete the project effectively. Or you could be hiring a building contractor to come in and do the job. Either way, one thing's for sure, you'll be embarking on a construction project inside the home. With this comes an increased risk of injury to you and family members. Keeping everyone safe during a home renovation project is important. Here are a few tips on how to do just that.

Dust Control

One of the biggest issues with a major renovation project is dust. If you're tearing out a wall or a floor, there is a good chance that there will be some form of dust that will reduce the overall air quality in your home temporarily. It's important to keep the dust contained as much as possible. Start by blocking off the room or work area with plastic. From there, use a respirator or wear a mask when working with unknown materials. This will also give you a clean surface area when working with drywall mud and other drywall supplies.

Don't Add Strain

It's easy for family to want to pitch in and help with moving items from one location to the other. This is fine except for the fact that everyone needs to use proper lifting techniques when grabbing large, heavy, or unsteady items. According to Business and Legal Resources, some things to keep in mind include:

  • If lifting, hold the object close to your body like you're hugging it and gradually straighten your body into a standing position.
  • Keep your torso pointed in the same direction while you're lifting—avoid twisting and overloading your spine.
  • Use the strength in your legs by bending your knees to support a heavy object. Avoid bending at the waist.
  • Don't lift or carry heavy items without help or assistance.

Avoiding strain will prevent injuries and sudden, unexpected trips to the emergency room.

Blocking Off Restricted Areas

Be sure to block off restricted areas in your home. If there are missing boards or exposed electrical wiring, be sure to use signs, tape, and other identifying factors to warn others of danger. Cones, fences, and tarps are other ways to block people from entering a work zone.

Keeping It Clean

The best thing you can do to keep your family safe throughout the renovation process is to keep everything clean. Picking up trash reduces the chances of a slip and fall from anyone in or around the construction zone. Making sure that you have a dumpster on hand for all used materials to be disposed of properly promotes safety. Vacuuming up debris after tools are used is the best way to keep air quality at its best and make it easier to move on to the next step in the project.

Safety is important during every facet of the construction process. This makes the entire project go smoother and more effectively. Contact a company like Rio Grande Drywall Supply Co for more information.
